Photo: Harry Ransom Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1928, British lesbian writer Radclyffe Hall\u2019s novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/blog\/2013\/09\/26\/banned-books-week-well-loneliness\"><em>The Well of Loneliness<\/em> <\/a>was published. It scandalized official British society, was decried as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/2005\/jan\/02\/books.gayrights\">a danger to the nation<\/a>&#8221; and was eventually suppressed and censored for being a work of &#8220;obscene libel&#8221;\u2014not because there was any actual description of lesbian sexual behaviors beyond a kiss and the most oblique mention of sharing a bed. Simply admitting that lesbianism existed was considered a scandalous act, and allowing a lesbian to share her thoughts on what it was like to experience romantic feelings for another woman caused official fear and outrage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"cn156\" data-offset-key=\"c708b-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"c708b-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c708b-0-0\">Happily, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/jan\/10\/it-has-made-me-want-to-live-public-support-for-lesbian-novelist-radclyffe-hall-over-banned-book-revealed\">we now know that Radclyffe Hall received thousands of letters of support<\/a> from people around the world, gay and straight, following the official ban placed on British publication of her work. That she kept those letters shows how deeply they moved her. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"cn156\" data-offset-key=\"5bqoh-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"cn156\" data-offset-key=\"ber72-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ber72-0-0\">In every cultural moment there have always been those who supported inclusivity and acceptance. When they speak up and announce who they are to the world, or when they prove themselves to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pflag.org\/allies\">allies<\/a>, they give comfort and strength to those on the front lines of social change. Even if we don&#8217;t feel strong enough to be leaders or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2016\/11\/09\/well-of-loneliness-trial-of-radclyffe-hall-virginia-woolf\/\">to profess our beliefs in public<\/a>, we do a great service by giving support and encouragement behind the lines.
